EAAP, the European Federation of Animal Science, held its 73rd Annual Meeting in Porto in September 2022, where we gave a presentation about the possibilities to measure variety of gases in individual cow breath, which is possible in connection to the use of Automated Precision Supplementation (APS).

Sensors for monitoring of gas emissions in cow breath, can for example in combination with the APS system give early warnings of acetonaemia by a non-invasive method (Dobbelaar et al, 1996) for strengthened cow management. Enteric methane production shows a large heritability of around 0.4 (de Haas et al., 2011) and use of APS fitted with methane sensors has potentially an important role in breeding for a reduced climate footprint of dairy production.

The presentation was in the same time the revelation of a new project, BreatherAIR, which is coordinated by MicroFeeder and co-funded from the Danish Innovation Fund with the purpose to develop a versatile and cost efficient device for measuring of gas emissions  from various production units, such as stables, industrial buildings or individual animals.
